The BJP Mayurbhanj (East) unit held a news conference here on Sunday to press for its demand for holding Rath Yatra on the Grand Road of Baripada, which is described as the second Shrikshetra. Party leaders urged the Government to give permission for the festival in full compliance with Covid norms as has been decided for the Rath Yatra at Shrikshetra Puri. The Press conference was addressed by district BJP president Kandra Soren along with MLAs Prakash Soren, Budhan Murmu and Sanatan Bijuli and leaders Kavi Vishnu Satpathy, Sanjeev Mohanty, Krushna Chandra Mohapatra and others. They said Baripada has been witnessing the famous Rath Yatra on its Grand Road for more than 400 years now.
Another speciality here is that Devi Shubhadra's chariot Darpadalan is pulled by women devotees alone, which has been a practice here since 1975. The Government’s decision banning the festival has shocked the people of Mayurbhanj.
