Police detained a 38-year-old woman, who is a BJP leader, on Wednesday on the charge of killing her husband in Jajpur district. The accused was identified as Mamata Kuar of Ismailpur village under the Mangalpur police station.

She and her husband are BJP leaders of the district. A preliminary investigation revealed that asphyxiation is suspected to be the cause of death that occurred on Tuesday night, said Mangalpur police station IIC Inamulla Haque.

The younger sister and mother-in-law of the accused were sleeping in another room in their rented house. They suddenly were awake after hearing the screams of the deceased. They found the deceased in an unconscious state for which they rushed him to the Community Health Centre (CHC) at Mangalpur where doctors declared him dead, added the police officer. The couple has a 12- year-old son. The accused unsuccessfully contested from the Zilla Parishad Zone-6 as BJP candidate in 2017. The motive behind the killing could not be ascertained immediately, said IIC Haque.
