BJP MLA comes to rape victim’s rescue, exposes medical college apathy

Thursday, 14 January 2021 | PNS | Lucknow

With Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath asserting to ensure justice in crimes against women, the insensitivity of officials was once again exposed in Shahjahanpur, after a 11-year-old girl was raped and was admitted to a  medical college only after her condition deteriorated on Tuesday. Even for getting her admitted and properly treated, the local BJP MLA had to intervene in the matter.

The victim was raped last Thursday while she was playing in the fields. The 20-year-old accused tried to strangle her after the rape and left her in a pool of blood.

After being subjected to the abuse, the victim’s kin rushed her to a health centre in Tilhar from where she was referred to Shahjahanpur Medical College only to be sent back home after a medical examination.

When activists of Childline learnt of the incident and about the victim’s condition, they informed BJP MLA from Tilhar, Roshanlal Verma, he visited the aggrieved family’s house and got the girl admitted to the medical college for treatment. It was only later that a case was registered and the accused was arrested.

Verma later raised the insensitive approach of the medical college authorities with the Principal Secretary to the CM, District Magistrate and the SP of Shahjahanpur and demanded a thorough probe into the incident.

Chief Medical Superintendent, UP Sinha said that the girl was brought to the medical college by the BJP MLA and a team of doctors was looking after the girl.

Elsewhere in Gonda, a 2019 batch woman constable attached with Reserve Police Lines alleged being raped by another constable at the latter’s home. A case registered after the woman complained to the seniors. But so far no action has been initiated.

Meanwhile in Badaun, all three accused in gang-rape and murder case of a woman in Ughaiti area were taken on police remand for quizzing. The Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court accepted the police plea of one-day remand through video conferencing.

Circle Officer Aniruddh Singh said that all three accused in Ughaiti case had been sent to jail but there were questions which need to be answered and it was necessary to take the accused on remand for questioning.
