After drawing all-round flak for holding panchayat elections in four phases in the third week of April, the Uttar Pradesh government decided to postpone the elections of block pramukh and chairman of district panchayat and postpone them for after June 15.
Earlier, these elections were proposed to be held between May 15 and 20. Holding the elections became untenable for the administration as the state government has imposed PARTIAL state-wide Corona curfew to arrest the spread of the viral infection. The programme for administering oath of office to the newly-elected village pradhans, proposed to be held between May 12 and 14, was also likely to be postponed. Also, the first meeting of elected village panchayats was also proposed to be organised on May 15 but that too was set to be deferred for a safer time.
The 75,845 newly-elected members of kshetra panchayat will elect 826 block pramukhs across the state while 3,050 elected members of district panchayats will elect chairman of district panchayats in 75 districts.
The elections of village panchayat, member village panchayat, member kshetr panchayat and member district panchayat ended on April 29.
