Bokaro Steel City is all set to emerge as a sports hub. The district administration, in coordination with Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) management, is at work to promote sports and events for the well being of masses, said Rajesh Kumar Singh, Deputy Commissioner Bokaro.

The district administration will provide office, infrastructure, and all logistic support for the development, said Singh. He was talking to the media persons at Collectorate Hall to mark the completion of one year of getting the ‘Global Active Partner City’ tag to Bokaro Steel City.

"Our aim is to build a healthy city and healthy society through sports so that our citizens and the coming generations can become the toppers in every field," said the DC.

Last year on 19 January, Bokaro was honoured with the ‘Global Active Partner City’ (GAC) standard and became the first city in India and the second in Asia to get this prestigious standard. After Karasiyaka in Turkey (the first city), Bokaro is the second city in Asia to get the tag.

Well known as ‘Educational’ and ‘Steel’ hub, Bokaro Steel City is a planned city established and maintained by Bokaro Steel Plant. It is also an urban agglomeration, a major industrial center, and the fourth-largest city in Jharkhand.

Mani Kant Dhan, Chief of Communications, BSL, said, under the ‘nucleus mission’ protected and supported by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Bokaro Steel City is connected to the Global Active City (GAC) network.

“This nucleus project (through the IOC) is an attempt to give a new direction to the society by connecting the Bokaro city under the Olympics in action so that residents of Bokaro district can be prepared in different areas through a healthy and functional environment,” added Dhan.

"We are ready with a ‘Calendar of Events’ to promote sports and well beings. It would be released very soon, might be on 24 January on the eve of the SAIL Foundation Day," said Dhan.

“On this move we are also planning to felicitate all Olympians residing across the Jharkhand. In near future we will organize an event where all of them will be honoured,” he added.

Expressing happiness over getting the prestigious GAC tag to the city, BSL Director-in-charge Amrandu Prakash said, we are on the move to give a strong boost to Sports in and around the city including periphery and command areas of BSL, especially during 2021.

Following the Coronavirus protocol and maintaining social distancing norms, several sports events, including Marathon, Cycle Race, Online Chess Competition, would be organised very shortly.

He appealed to each and every resident of the city to come forward and participate in all sports events for the well being.

On this glorious achievement, while talking to the Lead Officer Jaideep Sarkar, the Project Director, of the Global Active City Programme and Evaleo Michael Gross, congratulated the Administration & the SAIL Management of Bokaro Steel Plant for the cordial collaboration to pivot the significant first ever "Sports Culturing" mission in India.
