Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has given his consent for organizing a Road Safety World Series cricket tournament from March 2 to 21 in Raipur, it was announced on Sunday.
The tournament's Commissioner and eminent cricketer Sunil Gavaskar on Sunday urged Baghel over telephone to permit the tournament in Raipur and the Chief Minister "gladly approved it", a press release said.
The tournament will see players from India, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Australia and the West Indies including Sachin Tendulkar, Jonty Rhodes, Brett Lee, Brian Lara and Muttiah Muralitharan.
The main objective behind the tournament is to make the masses aware of the importance of road safety in India.
The tournament has been approved by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and supported by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, with Sunil Gavaskar's company organizing it.
The tournament will accelerate Chhattisgarh's economy and boost up people’s morale amid the Corona pandemic, the release said.
After the IPL in the UAE, Raipur will be the first city in the country to host a cricket meet during the Corona pandemic.
