Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has tested positive for novel coronavirus infection and is isolating himself, he tweeted on Wednesday afternoon.
The announcement came a day after the chief minister went into isolation after some officials of the CM secretariat tested positive.
On April 6, Yogi Adityanath had shared the dais with Bharatiya Janata Party General Secretary (Organisation) Sandeep Bansal to celebrate the party's foundation day.
The chief minister said all activities of the state government were being conducted normally and urged those who came in contact with him in recent days to get themselves tested.
Urban Development Ministers Ashutosh Tandon and Surya Pratap Sahi are also infected by the novel coronavirus.
"When the initial symptoms were seen, I got myself tested for Covid and my report came back as positive. I am in self-isolation and fully following the instructions of physicians. I am doing all the work virtually," he tweeted in Hindi.
Yogi Adityanath's announcement came the same day that his predecessor, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, also tested positive for COVID-19.
Last week, Akhilesh Yadav had travelled to Haridwar and held a meeting with various religious leaders. He had also come in contact with Mahant Mahendra Giri, the chairman of All-India Akhara Parishad, who tested positive soon after. Following this, Yadav had given samples for Covid test. He had received the first dose of vaccine against COVID-19 in Lucknow earlier this month.
Akhilesh Yadav isolated himself at his home after he tested positive. His treatment has started under the supervision of a medical team.
Taking to twitter, he appealed to all those who came in contact with him over the last couple of days to get their tests done.
After Akhilesh Yadav tested positive, his family, including wife, two daughters and son are also slated to undergo Covid tests. It was not yet known whether or not Akhilesh met his father Mulayam Singh Yadav over the last couple of days.
Experts have advised Covid tests for all his family and staff members.
Panic gripped the Samajwadi Party after Akhilesh Yadav's Covid report turned out positive. Many senior leaders who had met him in the last couple of days have registered themselves for RT-PCR tests at government hospitals.
After giving a sample on Tuesday, Yadav took a dig at the Yogi Adityanath government for launching a false propaganda of controlling the second surge of novel coronavirus infection in the state.
"Uttar Pradesh is facing a major crisis after the second wave of coronavirus swept the state. There is a shortage of beds, ambulances, doctors, testing kits and vaccines. Life-saving drugs are being sold at premium prices. Inadequate arrangements were made to meet the crisis," he alleged.
Yadav also sought to corner the chief minister, saying "why he lied to the people of the state, while people of the state are dying due to inadequate medical arrangements, the star campaigner is busy campaigning in West Bengal".
Yadav claimed that if the 24-hour ban on Mamata Banerjee clamped by the Election Commission was any indication, then the Bharatiya Janata Party was facing massive defeat in West Bengal.
