Covid-19 norms flouted during Durga idol immersion

Tuesday, 19 October 2021 | PNS | BALESWAR

Large-scale flouting of Covid guidelines was witnessed during the immersion of Durga idols here. Hardly were any Covid guidelines followed during the immersion processions. Social distancing and facemask-wearing cautions were largely overlooked.

As many as 51 puja committees were given permission for a procession for immersion of the idols in two identified ghats, one at Balighat and the other at Nuniajodi. Although DJ and other loud sound gadgets were not used during the procession, yet compliance to mask wearing and social distancing was not ensured. The enforcement agencies remained silent spectators while liquor traders too made brisk business.

During immersion, the idols were immersed in the rivers instead of the pits that were dug to overcome pollution-related issues. The pujacommittees blamed the district administration stating that although artificial ponds (pits) were dug yet they were without water. Hence, they were forced to immerse idols in the river water.
