A heartrending incident occurred in Kutra block ofSundargarh district on Saturday night, when a man ran from onecrematorium to another, for cremating his wife’s body but met withstiff resistance from locals as the diseased was a Covid patient.
Later, the local Sarpanch came to the man’s aid and allowed her ownland for the purpose.According to sources, Harideo Singh who hails from Kunipada villagelost his wife Tilotama Singh (55) to Covid. She was suffering fromfever since last one week and was admitted at the Kutra CommunityHealth Centre. However, when she tested Covid positive, she was beingtreated under home isolation.
On Saturday afternoon when she did not feel well and her oxygen leveldecreased, Harideo dialed for ambulance to shift her to a hospital. However, by the time the ambulance reached, delaying about two and ahalf hours, Tilotama had succumbed.
Keeping the body at home, Harideo and his relatives reached Gamardih burning ghat first with wood for cremation, but when locals heard that his wife died of Corona, they resisted. Harideo returned from there and went to another graveyard near Siajornala, but here too, he faced wrath of the locals.
They did not let him cremate the body, apprehending transmission of the virus. When Kutra Sarpanch Lalita Barua knew about it, she informed Kutra IIC
Susant Kumar Parida, Kutra Tehsildar Rabindra Kumar Sethi, Additional Tehsildar Habil Khakha and also authorities of Kutra CHC. Soon, theyrushed to the spot and tried to persuade the locals but in vain.Finally, Sarpanch Barua told Harideo to cremate the body in her ownland.
