Sunday, 28 November 2021 | Staff Reporter | NEW DELHI

The Dialogue and Development Commission of Delhi (DDC) will organise ‘Raahgiri Day’ in Najafgarh this Sunday on the theme of ‘Yuddh Pradushan Ke Viruddh’.

The event will be organised on November 28, 2021 from 7:30 am to 10:30 in partnership with Raahgiri Foundation and WRI India. The event will be held in the presence of Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot as the chief guest.

Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot said, “Delhi roads belong to all, and we want to give it back to pedestrians and cyclists.

Creating accessible and safe public spaces is something Delhi Government has been focusing on, with projects like ‘Tactical Urbanism’ and the redesigning of Delhi roads already underway.”Areas like Najafgarh, still have a village quality to them and the sense of community and belongingness is very strong. Being the elected representative of this constituency, I know that once the right awareness is created, residents of Najafgarh will be active stakeholders in this fight against pollution,” he added.

Vice Chairperson of DDC Jasmine Shah said, “Reducing pollution by promoting sustainable mobility is a core aspect of the ‘Yuddh Pradhushan ke Viruddh’ campaign.

“After the first ‘Raahgiri Day’ organised in East Delhi saw enthusiastic citizen participation. We have decided to bring the event to outer areas of Delhi, beginning with Najafgarh this Sunday. With the collective commitment and effort of various communities towards sustainable mobility, we can together reduce Delhi’s pollution and ensure safe streets,” he said.

A range of activities such as walking, running, cycling, skating, nukkad naatak, street games, music band, painting, dancing, performing arts, yoga, aerobics, Zumba etc will be organized, the DDC said in a statement.

This is the second of six Raahgiri Days being hosted in Delhi over three months with the theme ‘Yudh Pradushan Ke Virudh’. The first such event was organised on November 14, 2021 on the occasion of Children’s Day, in Patparganj, New Delhi in the presence of deputy CM Manish Sisodia as the chief guest.

The central idea of ‘Raahgiri Day’ is to allow people to experience a street without cars which can help them re-imagine what our streets and our environment can be. Creating open streets and public spaces for such activities also promotes public health, well-being, fitness, togetherness and joy, it said.
