At least 104 cases of dengue and 39 cases of Malaria have been reported in the national Capital so far this year, the data released by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) said on Monday.

According to the latest report released by all three Municipal Corporation, mosquito-breeding has been reported in at least 56310 households and 5627 prosecutions have been launched this year.

Concerned over the rising number of cases of vector borne diseases, the SDMC has intensified information, education and communication (IEC) activities as well as legal prosecution against defaulters.

A senior SDMC official said that a special campaign was conducted on July 31 for the detection of mosquito breeding and control measures taken against the same in the parks and plant nurseries in the jurisdiction of SDMC.

“A total of 764 parks and nurseries were checked. Out of these 557 parks and 135 nurseries were found positive for mosquito breeding due to intermittent rains and high humidity. The department issued 136 Legal notices and 48 challans against care takers/ supervisors as legal measures. Most common sites in the parks were containers, plastic waste, hydrants whereas, in the nurseries flower pots were found to be positive maximally,” he said.

The malaria parasite is transmitted by female Anopheles mosquitoes, which bite mainly between dusk and dawn. According to World Health Organisation malaria is caused by the protozoan parasite Plasmodium. Human malaria is caused by four different species of Plasmodium: P. falciparum, P. malariae, P. ovale and P. vivax.

The dengue breeding checkers have checked 13542714 houses and also issued 50,486 legal notices to various office and residential premises, the data said.

As per the civic report issued by the municipal corporations, 36 cases of dengue have been recorded till July 24 this year. However, no deaths have been reported due to dengue in the city till now, it said.

Fourteen cases of chikungunya have also been reported till July 24 this year, as per the civic report released on Monday. Dengue mosquito larvae breed in clear, standing water, while those of malaria thrive even in dirty water.

Cases of vector-borne diseases are usually reported between July and November but the period may stretch till mid-December.
