The commercial activities based on coal and industry were disrupted at Talcher due to an economic blockade launched by the Talcher Surakshya Manch (TSM) on Monday for an indefinite period. TSM leaders demanded establishment of a new plant with the existing Thermal Power Plant (TTPS) at Tacher. Besides, they demanded immediate functioning of the Talcher medical college, employment to the mining-affected people, completion of the Angul-Talcher rail loop and to ensure covering coal wagons as a measure to prevent pollution in the Talcher coal corridor.
Coal production and transportation were disrupted at all the ten coalmines, Kalinga, Hingula, Kaniha, Mahanadi, Bhubaneswari, Lingaraj, Bharatpur, Ananta, Jagannath and Balaram opencast mines projects due to the blockade. Coal supply to TTPS, NTPC Kaniha, JITPL, Nalco and other industries were affected due to the strike. The Talcher Surakhya Manch, an organisation of the ruling BJD, has called for the indefinite economic blockade.
