Forced to shut 50 centres due to lack of vaccines, says Atishi

Tuesday, 18 May 2021 | Staff Reporter | NEW DELHI

The Delhi Government will have to temporarily shut down more than 50 centres administering Covaxin to the 45+ age group and healthcare/frontline workers, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Kalakji, Atishi said.

Reading the vaccine bulletin, she said for the 18-44 group, 8,17,690 doses were received and 5,85,600 had already been utilised. There are nearly 57 lakh people above 45 years of age in Delhi and 22 lakh have been vaccinated.

On May 16, as many as 90,832 doses were administered in Delhi, of which 79,353 were first doses and the second doses were 11,479. In the 45+ segment, a total of 44,94,250 doses were received, out of which, 42,00,690 have been utilised and 2,93,000 are left. For the 18-44 group, Covaxin centres have been closed down, Covishield stock will only last four days.

“This number is slightly lower than the usual doses given on a daily basis, only because the gap between the first and second dose of Covishield has been increased up to 12-16 weeks by the Centre.

Approximately, more than 22 lakh people have got themselves vaccinated after registering themselves on CoWIN while the Delhi Government has also started offline registration at the centres with Aadhar number. Citing the position of remaining stock of vaccines in Delhi, Atishi said,

“For the 45+ segment, we have received a total of 44,94,250 doses, out of which, 42,00,690 have been utilised. So, we are left with nearly 2,93,000 doses, out of these 58,000 doses are of Covaxin, and 2,35,000 are of Covishield. This means, for 45+ and healthcare/frontline workers, after Monday evening, we have five days of stock for Covishield, and only a days’ stock for Covaxin. Hence, we will have no choice but to temporarily shut down as many as 50 vaccination centres administering Covaxin to this segment after tomorrow. In case we don’t receive new stock for Covaxin by the Central Government, we will have to shut down even more centres. We are hoping that the Modi Government will supply more vaccines at the earliest. That’s because the Delhi Government can vaccinate nearly three lakh people in a day. And we do have equipped our management systems in such a manner, like in Government schools, through which the programme has been ramped up. Unless we don’t receive enough vaccines, we cannot conduct the vaccination programme.”
