Following the death of as many as seven elephants at Karlapat Wildlife Sanctuary in Kalahandi district, the State Government on Monday suspended a Livestock Inspector from service on the charge of dereliction of duty.
Karlapat Livestock Inspector Ganesh Pujari was put under suspension, informed Animal Resources Additional Director Pratap Kishore Khamari. The move came after the latest instance of a decomposed body of an elephant calf being found at Ghusuriguda under the Karlapat Wildlife Sanctuary on Sunday taking the jumbo toll to seven in just 20 days.
On Saturday, a three-member Central team from Delhi had visited the sanctuary and confirmed that haemorrhage septicaemia was the reason of the elephants’ death. Earlier, six elephants, including a juvenile, had died in two weeks at the sanctuary.
The samples of elephant carcasses were sent to the Odisha University of Agriculture & Technology, Bhubaneswar, for examination. The test report suggested that the elephants died of haemorrhage septicaemia.
