Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Anil Baijal on Tuesday directed officers to formulate a time-bound action plan for setting up of e-waste processing units in the national Capital and to work in close coordination with the Central Pollution Control Board, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology for effective implementation of the project.
The direction came in a review meeting chaired by Baijal on Tuesday on e-waste management with Chief Secretary, Delhi, Principal Secretary (Environment) and officials of the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited.
“During the meeting, the strategy for setting up an e- waste processing park in Delhi was discussed in detail to ensure scientific, efficient and environmentally safe disposal of all types of electronic waste,” the L-G’s office said in a statement.
“It was emphasised that an institutional mechanism should be devised to suitably integrate the unorganised sector that includes traditional kabaadi walas (junk dealers), rag pickers and non-governmental organisations, in e-waste collection and processing,” it said.
“The local bodies should be closely involved in the venture and learnings from other States where similar initiatives have been taken should be effectively dovetailed,” it added.
