nChhattisgarh Police have arrested a 24-year-old man for cheating a woman of Rs 30 lakh on the pretext of providing gold biscuits in May last year. Two other accused are still at large.

Jashpur Superintendent of Police Balaji Rao told The Pioneer on Wednesday that Vijay Suryavanshi alias Deepak Gupta (24), who hails from Korea district, has been nabbed and sent to jail by a court.

On May 3, 2020, the accused and his accomplices Anup Soni and Dholu Sonawala cheated Marry Tigga on the pretext of providing her gold biscuits.

During investigation, police came to know that the accused met the woman for installing a mobile tower. Later, they gained her confidence and started frequently visiting her home.

After a few months, they told her about a beggar who reportedly possessed gold biscuits. They suggested her to buy the biscuits so that she could make a more profitable investment.

The woman, not suspecting anything amiss, allegedly gave the accused Rs 30 lakh cash and took a bag which instead of containing gold biscuits only had iron rods.

The woman’s family filed a complaint with the Bagicha police.
