The Pujya Puja Samiti, a frontline socio-cultural organisation, observed the 122nd birth anniversary of great patriot and freedom fighter Sahid Lakshman Nayak on Monday. The members of the Samiti and other dignitaries garlanded the statue of Sahid Nayak.
Samiti president Bansidhar Bhuyan presided over a meeting held on the occasion. Bhuyan in his address said that Sahid Nayak was inspired by Gandhiji’s call for “do or die” and sacrificed his life while fighting against injustice of the British regime. His efforts to unite the tribals against liquor consumption and make them literate were commendable, he added.
Tribal resistance movement was an integral part of the freedom struggle in India and Sahid Laxman Nayak of Koraput was a true patriot, said social activist and convener of MASM Abani Gaya.
The speakers recalled how Nayak who was born on November 22, 1899 in Tentuligumma of Malkangiri in a Bhuyan tribe fought singlehanded against the oppressive foreign rulers.
