More Congress leaders may quit party

Sunday, 13 June 2021 | PNS | Lucknow

With all possibility of Bharatiya Janata Party’s new entrant Jitin Prasada being made an MLC and given a plump cabinet post in Uttar Pradesh to make him the Brahmin face of the party for 2022 assembly polls,  several senior Congress leaders are in the queue to leave the grand oldest party for their future political aspirations.

Top among them are senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member from UP, Kapil Sibal, who too could part ways with the Congress in the near future. Though the renowned lawyer has denied that he would embrace the BJP like Jitin Prasada and Jyotriaditya Scindia at any cost, he did not deny the possibility of the party. "I would never join BJP at any cost," he repeatedly said.

Sibal and Jitin were the members of the Group 23 lead by Ghulam Nabi Azad that had questioned the Congress high command on several issues, including internal democracy and organisational elections.

A top source close to Kapil Sibal said on Saturday that “how can a senior leader like Sibal stay in the party amid ignorance by the high command”.

“Sibal, in the past around six months, has sought one-to-one discussion with Rahul Gandhi but he failed to give any time,” sources said, adding that Sibal was not a small leader of the party but ignorance of the high command was now indirectly forcing the leaders to part ways with the party.

On the other hand, Sibal, while speaking to media after Jitin Prasada left the Congress, said, “If Prasada has left the party unhappy over the response of the leadership on the concerns raised by the letter writers, that is his personal choice and he is entitled to leave, but I wonder why he decided to join the BJP."

The senior leader also exuded confidence that the Congress leadership would listen and resolve its internal issues. "Nothing survives without listening. No corporate structure can survive without listening and so is it with politics. If you don’t listen, you will fall into bad days,” he had said.

Sibal was elected to Rajya Sabha from UP in 2016 amid heavy crossing-voting and his term expires on July 4, 2022.Though Sibal has denied going to BJP but he could join some other party like Trinamool Congress or Nationalist Congress Party but not before the fag end of his Rajya Sabha membership term.

Meanwhile, several other senior UP Congress leaders may join other political parties, either BJP or Samajwadi Party before the 2022 assembly polls. Two rebel Congress MLAs, Aditi Singh and Rakesh Singh, both from Rae Bareli, the parliamentary constituency of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, are set to join the BJP before 2022 assembly polls. Similarly in Western UP too, some influential Congress leaders too are in touch with SP and BJP .

On the other hand, BJP leader Jitin Prasada is likely to get a plump post in the party. Sources in BJP said he could be the Brahmin face of the party in the 2022 polls and he could be made MLC and given a ministerial berth.

Jitin was already working to unite the Brahmin under his Brahmin Chetna Parishad for the past couple of years in UP.
