The Rajasthan Police arrested 11 cybercriminals from Alwar and Mewat of Rajasthan who interestingly were using the morphed video of cybercrime DSP of Jharkhand Police Sumit Kumar to extort money from victims.
While Rajasthan police were already tracking cybercriminals; Sumit Kumar alerted Rajasthan police that his video is being used by cybercriminals for extortion.
“I had posted a video on a social site on how to stay alert from a possible cyber fraud. These cybercriminals downloaded that video. These criminals morphed the video by muting the voice. They embedded a voiceover threatening and blackmailing the victim for money.” The DSP informed.
A person from Uttar Pradesh who follows Sumit Kumar on social site had first informed him about his morphed video being used for extortion. He informed DSP that he knows a person who has received this video. The cyber DSP informed Rajasthan police and the subsequent investigation confirmed this.
Investigation revealed that these criminals are involved in online purchase fraud, cloning of Facebook accounts besides sextortion. Arrested accused told the police that they induced the victim for an online sexual act during the video call. They later on send morphed video to such persons and threaten them that FIR has been lodged against them and if they want to avoid police action they need to give money for settlement.
These criminals also used to display the video on LED screens and laptops while demanding extortion through video calls. They used to focus mobile cameras on the screen to make victims believe that they are talking to a police officer. During the raid by Rajasthan police over 27 mobile phones and a large number of electronic devices were confiscated by the police.
However, it is not clear whether Jharkhand police will also lodge an FIR for misusing video content of cyber DSP.
