The students of Madhya Pradesh School of Drama (MPSD) beautifully presented the collage of years old Sanskrit plays before the Bhopalites. The plays Madhyam Vyayog and Abhigyan Shakuntalam were presented under class presentation.
The plays were performed under the direction of expert Ramji Bali from Banaras. The students presented the almost 2000 years old drama script Abhigyan Shakuntalam written by the renowned playwright Kalidasa and Madhyam Vyayoga written by Bhasa.
The play is all about the love saga of prince Dushyant and the protagonist Shakuntala. Shakuntala is the daughter of Maneka and Vishwamitra and Dushyant the prince of Hastinapura. Once Dushyanta went on hunting where he saw Shakuntala and fell for her. He gives her a ring so that she can claim her to be his queen when they meet next and says he will return soon. While Shakuntala is fantasizing about Dushyanta a saint comes to her for food. When she seems to be ignorant the saint curses her that Dushyanta will forget her. Later, the story follows Shakuntala’s journey to find her love and Dushyanta to remember him.
Madhyam Vyayog is about a Brahmin family passing through the forest where the exiled Pandavas are dwelling. The family encounters Ghatotkacha who is in search of a human for his mother Hidimba’s meal. He holds the family captive and asks them to decide who should accompany him. The eldest son of the family being dear to the father, and the youngest to the mother, the middle son is the only choice left to be handed over to Ghatotkacha. Being the middle one he is called ‘Madhyama’. Madhyama is thirsty and requests Gatotkacha to be allowed to go to a nearby pond for water. Ghatotkacha agrees and asks him to return quickly. But Madhyama gets delayed and Gatotkacha starts calling out to him.
