Samajwadi Party suffered a setback in panchayat elections as one member of the first family of the party, Sandhya Yadav, defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Sandhya Yadav, niece of Mulayam Singh Yadav, is the former chairman of Mainpuri district panchayat and has been fielded for the post of district panchayat member from Ghiror seat in Mainpuri district.
The elected members of the district panchayat constitute the electoral college for the election of chairman of zila panchayat.
Sandhya's brother Dharmendra Yadav is a former MP from Budaun.
Mainpuri has 30 wards of district panchayat members and the BJP has released the list of candidates for all 30 wards. Sandhya Yadav is candidate from ward number 18 in Mainpuri district.
Samajwadi Party in Mainpuri and neighbouring Firozabad district is gripped by internecine factional fights. In March, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav had expelled party MLA Hari Om Yadav from Firozabad district, The MLA is also a relative of Mulayam Singh Yadav.
Owing to bitter factional feud in the SP, no confidence motion was brought against Sandhya Yadav, for dislodging her from the post of chairman of Mainpuri district panchayat. She however won the battle with the help of the BJP and the motion was defeated. Anudesh Yadav, husband of Sandhya Yadav, is already a member of the BJP since 2017.
