Naveen's Puri visit row: ‘Projectile object’, not eggs thrown at CM, say police

Sunday, 28 November 2021 | SAROJ KUMAR MISHRA | PURI

Following egg hurling at the carcade of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik during hos Puri visit on Wednesday, a row has erupted over the porous security arrangement by police.

Though police have remanded three BJP activists in judicial custody in this connection, but interestingly, there is no mention of eggs in the complaint. Instead, police have cited that a projectile object was thrown at the carcade, giving a twist to a video played by many news channel, showing eggs thrown at the CM's car.

In the video telecast, a person with eggs in hand is seen targeting the CM's carcade with other fellows waving black flag when the CM is on his way back to a helipad from the Shreemanira.

But in the complaint these things are absent. Meanwhile, there are mixed reactions over the incident in Puri. While the BJD took on the BJP for targeting the CM who came for a purely religious work for its political interest, there were many local residents who criticized the administration for imposing an undeclared curfew along Badadanda for the CM visit.

Even some opined that shops along Badadanda had never been shut earlier even during visit of the President and the PM. “The CM’s visit for development of Jagannath Temple was completely apolitical. Rather than welcoming the CM, what the BJP supporters did was a criminal act for which they deserve strong punishment,” told BJD State vice-president Subhasish Khuntia.

“We had never asked anybody to pelt eggs at the CM. Rather they did it on their own as it was part of a symbolic protest in the whole State against CM taking no action against Minister for State for Home Dibya Shankar Mishra who is an accused in the Mamita Meher murder case,” said  Puri BJP MLA Jayant Sarangi.
