Notification issued for lone seat from MP

Thursday, 16 September 2021 | Staff Reporter | Bhopal

With issuance of a notification on Wednesday regarding by-election for a Rajya Sabha seat from Madhya Pradesh, the process for submission of nomination papers commenced but no candidate did so on this day.

The by-poll was necessitated due to resignation of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Mr Thaawarchand Gehlot on July 7. Gehlot was appointed as Karnataka Governor.

“September 22 is the last date for submitting nomination papers, scrutiny is scheduled for the following day, September 27 is the deadline for withdrawal of candidature and voting — if required — will be conducted on October 4,” Principal Secretary (State Assembly) AP Singh said.

In the 230-strong Vidhan Sabha, the ruling BJP has 125 members, the Congress 95, Bahujan Samaj Party two and Samajwadi Party one. There are four independents and three positions are vacant. As the Congress announced that it would not field any nominee, the outcome is a foregone conclusion.
