Notification issued for second phase of panchayat polls

Uttar Pradesh State Election Commission (SEC) on Wednesday issued the notification for the second phase of panchayat polls to be held in 20 districts, including the state capital Lucknow, on April 19.  
Over 123 million voters are eligible to cast their votes in the four-phase panchayat polls through ballot papers to be held on April 15, 19, 26 and 29 with counting of votes being taken up on May 2.
The notification for the first phase of panchayat polls in 18 districts was issued on April 3 and Wednesday was the last date for withdrawal of nominations.
Nominations for the second phase poll in 20 districts will continue for two days, till Thursday and scrutiny of papers will be gone on April 9. The last date of withdrawal of nominations is April 11 and the polling for the second phase will be held on April 19.
Candidates can file their nominations for the posts of gram pradhan, gram panchayat, kshetra panchayat and zila panchayat members and each voter will be eligible to cast four votes, one each for village panchayat member, gram pradhan, kshetra panchayat member and zila panchayat member.
The nomination papers will be filed between 8 am and 5 pm at the office of the block development officer in the districts on the two days. Strict Covid protocol will be enforced during the nomination process.  
UP Additional Election Commissioner Ved Prakash Verma said here on Wednesday that instructions had been issued to all the district magistrates that the crowd of supporters of the candidates coming to the block office should be stopped outside a radius of 200 metre on the nomination day and only the candidate, his election agent, proposer and one more person should be allowed to enter the nomination room.
In the second phase, the panchayat polls will be held in Muzaffarnagar, Baghpat, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Bijnor, Amroha, Budaun, Etah, Mainpuri, Kannauj, Etawah, Lalitpur, Chitrakoot, Pratapgarh, Lucknow, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sultanpur, Gonda, Maharajganj, Varanasi and Azamgarh districts.  
Meanwhile, in Lucknow, elaborate security arrangements have been made for the panchayat polls.
