On music rights-IPRS issues legal notice to Hockey WC organizers

Friday, 26 November 2021 | PNS | BHUBANESWAR

The Indian Performing Right Society Ltd. (IPRS) has issued a legal notice to the organisers and the venue of the Men’s FIH Junior Hockey World Cup here.

According to a statement of the society, as it is mandated in protecting its member’s rights, the copyright body had to issue a legal notice to the organisers and the venue of the event at the Kalinga Stadium starting from November 24 as they have failed to procure the necessary licence from the IPRS.

The statement said that as per the Copyright Act 1957, for any commercial use of music in the form of a live show, event, public performance, broadcast, telecast in any manner, permission from IPRS is mandatory.

“No recorded songs can be used anywhere regardless of the event or the match without an IPRS permission and any violation will lead to infringement of copyright law and the infringers have to pay a huge compensation if the music is played without obtaining the required license,” the statement added.

The IPRS India’s only registered Copyright Society under Section 33(3) of the Copyright Act, 1957 is a representative body of music composers, lyricists, and publishers. IPRS is a Non-Profit organization formed to protect, monitor, and enforce the rights of its members and counts more than 8,000 members as part of the society.
