Only locals in 18+ group to be vaccinated in UP

Tuesday, 11 May 2021 | PNS | Lucknow

The Uttar Pradesh government has issued an order maintaining that only residents from the state in the age group of 18-44 years will be vaccinated in government-run centres and officials have been directed to ensure that people from other states are not administered vaccines in designated centres across the state.
In an order (SPMU/NHM/RR/2021-22/60 414-2) issued on Friday, Director Health Mission, Aparna Upadhaya said that from May 1, vaccination has started for 18+ and only those who have registered online will be entertained.
“It is brought to our notice that in few districts, online registration of 18-44 years is being done by people from other states. Thus, residents of Uttar Pradesh are deprived of this vaccination facility.  As the UP government is purchasing vaccines from its own kitty to vaccinate people between 18-44 years, it should be ensured that people who are being vaccinated are from Uttar Pradesh,” the order said.
The said order was sent to all district magistrates and chief medical officers of the state. The order puts the vaccination of people, who are from other states but working in UP, in a limbo.
“When vaccination is a national campaign, how can the state government discriminate between UP people and non-UP people,” asked human rights activist Lenin Raghuvanshi.
Health Minister Jai Pratap Singh, however, feigned ignorance about the order. “For vaccination, the only mandatory clause is registration. Bona fide residence proof is not required,” he said. When asked about specific government orders to DMs and CMOs, the Minister said that he had no knowledge about the order.
The UP government has initiated vaccination for the 18-44 age group in 18 districts. Earlier, on May 1 it was for seven districts Lucknow, Kanpur, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Meerut, and Bareilly and on May 6 the government added 11 more districts namely Aligarh, Agra, Ghaziabad, Jhansi, Moradabad, Saharanpur, Firozabad, Mathura, Ayodhya, Shahjahanpur and Gautam Budh Nagar to the list.
To meet the demand of vaccines, the state government floated a global tender for purchase of 4 crore doses of Covid-19 vaccines. The last date for submission of the tender is May 21. Besides, the government has already ordered one crore Covid vaccines from two Indian companies manufacturing Covaxin and Covishield vaccines. Till Sunday, 1.17 lakh youth between the age group of 18 and 44 were vaccinated in UP.
