Pandemic puts much needed spotlight on mental health

Thursday, 28 October 2021 | Staff Reporter | Bhopal

The pandemic has put the much needed spotlight on mental health. It has sparked dialogues globally, leading to the recognition that mental health is critical in helping us deal with the many different crises that the unprecedented times have brought with it- loss of jobs, financial security, health concerns, fears of the future, grief and other issues. The Tokyo Olympics also brought in a sharper focus to this topic. Finally, there is a recognition that the deep-seated stigmas attached to it have to be addressed, to make ourselves and our future generations resilient.

Mental Health in an Unequal World, brings to fore the inequities that exist within the system, in access to healthcare facilities, putting further spotlight on the associated mental health concerns that some groups face more of. While this is critical, it is equally important that this dialogue on mental health is sustained and we do not wait for crisis situations to hit us.

It’s in fact the everyday issues and the inability to cope with them that causes stress and feeling of living unfulfilled lives that needs equal attention, says Deepa A Agarwal, Author of Hangover of Choices and founder of Re-Link Consulting.

Deepa has over two decades of experience in the Diversity, Inclusion and mental health space. Awarded the title of Exceptional Woman of Excellence, by the Women Economic Forum, she is also recognised by The Centre of Global Inclusion, with whom she is an expert panel member.
