Piercing cold sweeps parts of Punjab, Haryana

The severe cold wave sweeping most parts of Punjab and Haryana intensified on Thursday with Narnaul recording a low temperature of 1.8 degrees Celsius.

Narnaul in Haryana was the coldest in the region, with its minimum temperature settling three notches below normal.  Others parts of Haryana also reeled under biting cold conditions with Ambala witnessing minimum temperature at 3.1 degree Celsius, three notches below normal and Hisar recording a low of 3.7 degree Celsius.

Karnal and Bhiwani recorded respective minimum temperatures of 4 degree Celsius and 4.3 degree Celsius. Rohtak and Sirsa braved the chill at 3.8, and 5.8 degrees Celsius respectively.

Chandigarh, the common capital of Punjab and Haryana recorded a minimum temperature of 3.8 degree Celsius, one degree below normal while the maximum temperature settled at 17.7 degree Celsius, down by three notches from normal limit. In Punjab also, people braved the cold weather with minimum temperatures of Pathankot settling at 2.5 degree Celsius.

Amritsar, Ludhiana and Patiala registered their minimum temperatures at 6.5, 4.8 and 5.1 degrees Celsius respectively. Among other places in Punjab, Adampur, Halwara, Bathinda, Faridkot and Gurdaspur recorded minimum temperatures at 2.1, 4.2, 3.6, 5 and 8 degrees Celsius respectively.

A Met official said that fog led to reduced visibility at several places in Punjab and Haryana on Thursday morning.

He said that cold wave conditions will prevail in the region during the next 24 hours. Shallow to moderate fog is likely at a few places during 48 hours in Punjab and Haryana, the Met official said.

The maximum temperatures also recorded were upto six notches below normal in parts of two states.

Karnal recorded maximum temperature of 14.5 degrees, down by four notches from normal, Hisar recorded 17 degrees, three notches below normal and Ambala recorded 13.2 degree Celsius, five degrees below normal.

In Punjab, Amritsar recorded below normal day temperature at 12.9 degrees, which was five notches down the normal limit. Ludhiana and Patiala recorded respective maximum temperatures of 12.4 degree Celsius and 12.6 degree Celsius, both six notches below normal.Meanwhile, the hill state of Himachal Pradesh also reeled under biting cold conditions.

The tribal Lahaul and Spiti’s administrative centre Keylong continued to be the coldest place in the state at minus 10.9 degrees Celsius while Kalpa recorded a low of minus 0.6 degrees Celsius.

The minimum temperatures in Manali, Dalhousie and Kufri were recorded at 1, 7.6 and 8.1 degrees Celsius respectively. The state’s capital- Shimla registered a low of 6.1 degrees Celsius.

The Met Department, Shimla has forecast dry weather in the state till January 20.
