Plainclothes cops to enforce Covid norms

Sunday, 11 April 2021 | PNS | BHUBANESWAR

A day after Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik launched the 14-day ‘Mask Abhiyaan’, the Commissionerate Police (CP) on Saturday formed special teams for strict enforcement of Covid appropriate behaviour in the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.

Bhubaneswar DCP (Security) Nirmal Satpathy said that 20 teams have been formed by police to strictly enforce the mask-wearing norm in Bhubaneswar. The teams would be engaged for surveillance in various crowded places, including Market Building and other busy markets here.

“Plainclothes police personnel will conduct raids to nab violators of the norm and stringent action will be taken against them,” he warned.

Notably, on Friday, the State Government doubled the penalty for not wearing mask. Violators would have to pay Rs 2,000 for first two violations and Rs 5,000 for subsequent offences. Earlier, the fine amount was Rs 1,000 for first two violations and Rs 5,000 for subsequent offences.

In the last 24 hours, Odisha police acted against 12,145 violators and collected fine of Rs 38,98,250 for flouting masking and physical distancing norms.
