Poet Mahapatra wins Covid battle

Celebrated Indian English poet Jayanta Mahapatra has won the battle against Covid-19.The 93-year-old writer was undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College Hospital here since May 31. As he was suffering from age-related ailments and had diabetes, his treatment was challenging for  doctors.Mahapatra is the first in the country to have won  Sahitya Akademi Award for English poetry. He is credited with works ‘Indian Summer’ and ‘Hunger’, the classics in modern Indian English literature.

He was conferred with the Padma Shri in the year 2009. However, he returned the prestigious award in 2015 to protest against moral asymmetry in country.
