Prafulla Samantara denounces Odisha Agri Ordinance

Monday, 15 February 2021 | PNS | BRAHMAPUR

Describing re-promulgation of The Odisha Agricultural Produce and Livestock Marketing (Promotion and Facilitation) Ordinance as deplorable, unwanted and betrayal to farmers who are on warpath along with farmers of rest of country against the three anti-farm laws, Lok Shakti Aviyan convenor Prafulla Samantara on Sunday warned Government to stop passing of Bill in  Assembly; otherwise, farmers of Odisha would resort to agitation. While speaking to Press here, Samantara pointed out that Odisha Government's ill intention is clearly visible. “After Cabinet approval, the design is to bring a draft Bill in  form of an ordinance for legislation in forthcoming Budget Session of State Assembly,” he said.According to him, when farmers are prepared to die demanding withdrawal of three Central legislations and when at least 220 farmers have already died for cause, it is unfortunate Odisha Government it attempting to bring a Bill to introduce a private mandi system and demolish Government-controlled Agriculture Produce Marketing Cooperatives (APMCs). “The State Govt has a moral and Constitutional responsibility to protect marginalised and exploited farmers through an effective and strong law to ensure that the MSP is guaranteed,” Samantara argued. He added that at least the Odisha Government should follow the Kerala, Punjab and Rajasthan Governments to bring a legislation to counter Central law to ensure MSP as the agriculture is under the State list. He also demanded a legislation to protect rights of sharecroppers.
