Dance of death was witnessed in Punjab on Tuesday. Every hour, on an average, nine persons succumbed to the deadly contagion. As the state reported the highest ever single day death toll of 217, two of its districts — Ludhiana (30) and Bathinda (27) — reported one-fourth of the total casualties.
With this, the state’s death toll has reached 10,918 at the case fatality rate of 2.38 per cent. Besides, six other districts reported fatalities in two-digit figures — including Amritsar (17), Patiala (17), Muktsar (13), Sangrur (13), Fazilka (12), and Ferozepur (10).
The state registred 8,668 fresh cases in the past 24 hours, at the positivity rate of 15.03 percent, pushing the state’s infection tally to 4,59,268. Ludhiana with 1386 fresh cases reported the maximum number of infections in a single day, while Mohali reported second highest with highest positivity rate of 30.81 percent, next to Mansa which registred 34.71 percent positivity rate for 537 cases.
The state now has 76,856 active cases (16.74 percent of the total positive cases), of which whopping 9,652 patients are on oxygen support while 324 are critical and on ventilator support.
