Out on bail, Kartar Singh, 67, a retired Sub-inspector of Chandigarh Police on Tuesday allegedly killed his 60-year-old wife by banging her head on floor repeatedly at his Phase-XI house in Mohali. The deceased has been identified as Kuldeep Kaur.
Kartar Singh locked the room from inside but was arrested from near the body of his wife two hours later. A case of murder has been registered against him, said Mohali Police. Kartar Singh had retired from Chandigarh Police seven years ago.
Sources said that a quarrel broke out between Kartar Singh and his wife and it escalated to such an extent that Kartar Singh killed her by repeatedly hitting her head on the floor. In 2017, Kartar Singh had shot dead his brother-in-law who owned an eatery in Sohana. In this case, he was lodged in jail for 4 years. He had come out on bail recently. Sources said the suspect allegedly used to threaten his brother and wife often.
Eyewitnesses told the police that Kartar Singh was grieving on the blood-splattered floor near the body when police broke open the door.
The duo was apparently feuding over a court case in which the deceased’s wife was a witness. The couple had been arguing since morning after their youngest son, employed in Mohali SSP’s office, left for work. When neighbours heard the commotion from the house, they informed the son to come and calm down the matter. He sent an acquaintance to inquire into the matter who later told him about the incident. The couple’s eldest son is presently in Australia.
