Reverse migration begins as workers start returning to cities

Friday, 04 June 2021 | PNS | Ranchi

With fewer jobs in their hometown and decline in Covid cases in the country, migrant workers and professionals, who a few months back had returned to their native place have once again started rushing back to cities where they had worked for years.

The migrant workers are working at textile mills, construction and automobile industries apart from working professionals working at multinational companies among others.

Due to the return of these migrant workers and professionals, most of the trains for Mumbai, Surat, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru are running at full capacity with a long waiting list. Everyday hundreds of passengers reach Hatia station and Ranchi Railway station with a hope of getting confirmed tickets at any trains going to these cities, but, every time they return disappointed.

Railway sources said that in view of the rush of passengers in trains going to Mumbai, Surat, Ahmadabad, Bengaluru, Chennai and other southern cities, the South East Railway Headquarters have been informed about the non-availability of seats in trains going to these places. At the same time, a proposal to run a special train for Mumbai has also been sent.

It is expected that a special train will start operation for Mumbai within a week. After the rush of passengers in the trains of Mumbai, Delhi, Surat and Bengaluru, CPRO Neeraj Kumar said that a report has been sent to the headquarters in this regard. Arrangements are also being made to install additional coaches in trains.

CPRO Neeraj Kumar said, “Most of the trains going to these cities have no seat availability. Few weeks back there were no passengers in these trains going to Mumbai, Surat and Bengaluru from Ranchi, but now all trains are running with full capacity.”  Trains having no seat availability can be gauged from the fact that the Dhanbad-Alappuzha Express has a long waiting till June 5. Garib Rath train, which runs three days a week, had 137 waiting on Tuesday. Seats are not available on June 2 and there is 181 waiting on June 4. Seat is not available in Hatia-Pune special train on June 4. On other hand, there is no seat available in the Lokmanya Tilak Terminal Mumbai-bound special train which leaves once a week on Fridays.

With decline in corona cases and relaxation in lockdown migrant workers have decided to return back to their working cities. Manohar Prasad, a migrant working at Surat said, “As there is decline in corona cases in Gujarat factories have started operations. If we don’t return then the factory operators will be left with no other alternative but to hire other workers.”

Echoing views of Manohar Prasad, Ramjii Singh who also works in Gujarat said for the past two months we are living in our hometown with no work.  He said, “As in our hometown there is no work so we thought of going back to cities where we had worked so that at least we can run our family.”
