Rivers on danger mark, admin sounds alert

Friday, 17 September 2021 | PNS | Jamshedpur

The administration has sounded an alert as two important rivers continued to flow above the danger mark due to heavy rainfall. Residents of low lying areas have been asked to vacate and move to shelter homes.

River Subarnarekha (at the  Mango bridge) flowed at 121.680 metres above the danger mark of 121.50 metres, Kharkai ( at the Adityapur bridge)  was flowing at 130.680 metres above the danger mark of 129 metres.

Several houses in the area of Kharkai river have been inundated with river water owing to the incessant rains for the last 48 hours. According to the reports, slums in the Bagbera, Shastrinagar, Jugsalai, Sonari among other areas that are prone to washout during monsoon season, are confronting problems. The district administration has confirmed about a dozen odd houses in the low lying area in Bagbera that have been largely affected with the rise in the water level in Kharkai river.

The rising water level at the Chandil dam prompted the authorities of the state water resources department to open radial gates of the dam. " Yesterday we opened four radial gates. Overnight rains compelled us to open another radial gate," said an official of water resources department

“Weather conditions will remain the same, by and large, and incessant rains in moderate to heavy form will continue for the next two days,” said the local met office. The monsoon is back to life, here for the last one week, in the wake of cyclonic circulation over Gangetic Bengal and Bangladesh, said a met official.

In the wake of incessant rains, for the last two days, flooding the low lying areas and water level experiencing a gradual increase in the two rivers the authorities have jumped into action.

An official said that the sluice gates were opened this morning after which the drain water started receding.

In the wake of incessant rains, for the last two days, flooding the low lying areas and water level experiencing a gradual increase in the two rivers the authorities have jumped into action.

The city has turned into a motorists' nightmare. Many roads are undergoing concretisation and pipelines are being laid in several areas like Jugsalai and Bagbera. As a result the motorists have faced hell during rains. Many motorists have found it difficult to distinguish between the road and the dug up place due to water clogging.
