SDMC launches online facility for scientific disposal of e-waste

Saturday, 12 June 2021 | Staff Reporter | NEW DELHI

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has started an online facility to ensure collection and scientific disposal of e-waste.

As per the agreement, a private company will purchase e-waste from the citizens through a tender and will ensure its disposal in a proper manner, a senior SDMC official said, adding that the e-waste will be collected on the basis of requests received through an online system.

The official said that the civic agency has partnered with RBH E-Waste Recycle Hub Private Limited to dispose old and unserviceable IT equipment received from the offices, citizens, Resident Welfare Associations and markets etc under the jurisdiction of the civic body.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has notified the e-waste Management Rules-2016 following which the SDMC has engaged the private firm on the basis of open tender for disposal of  e-waste collected through online facilities.

E-Waste is a general term given to electronic and electrical items like computers, transformers, freezers, refrigerators, switches, TV, etc which have reached end of life. E-waste contains toxic chemicals and minerals like arsenic, cadmium, acid etc, hence it requires recycling in a scientific manner.

“If such an item is not disposed of in a scientific manner, it can cause massive damage to the environment due to its toxic nature. That is the reason the SDMC has introduced an online facility of e-waste collection,” he said.

To ensure proper disposal, the corporation has launched a portal https://ewaste.mcdservices.online for submitting the online request for collecting e-waste. Citizens can raise the request on this portal and the vendor will collect the e-waste from their doorsteps as per approved rates fixed by the SDMC, he said.

“The citizens will also be provided a certificate regarding safe disposal of their e-waste by the vendor,” he added.
