SIT releases e-mail, WhatsApp number for furnishing evidence

Tuesday, 11 May 2021 | PNS | Chandigarh

Days after its constitution, the newly constituted Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Monday shared an e-mail address: newsit2021kotkapuracase@gmail.com and a dedicated WhatsApp number 98759-83237 (without calling facility) to the public to furnish details or documents, if anyone desires, so that a free and fair probe could be conducted in an effective and efficient manner.

The email and number was shared with an aim to collect more relevant evidence and information from the stakeholders, if not submitted earlier, and suggestions from any quarters.

Notably, the Punjab Government has recently constituted a new SIT in pursuance to the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The SIT held its maiden meeting on Monday at Vigilance Bhawan in SAS Nagar (Mohali) to discuss the modalities for conducting the thorough investigations into the Kotkapura incidents.

Besides this, the SIT has already held different meetings with the officers and officials of police and legal departments in this regard.

The SIT has assured that as per the orders of the High Court, the investigations pertaining to both the FIRs (No 192 dated October 14, 2015, and No 129 dated August 7, 2018) registered at police station Kotkapura would be concluded as expeditiously as possible and to take it at a logical conclusion in an appropriate time.

On May 7, the Government constituted a new three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), comprising of senior IPS officers, while directing it to complete the investigations into the Kotkapura firing incident, preferably in six months, as per the Court’s orders.

The newly-constituted SIT, comprising ADGP (Vigilance Bureau) LK Yadav, Ludhiana Commissioner of Police Rakesh Agarwal and Faridkot Range DIG Surjit Singh, would investigate the two FIRs (dated October 14, 2015 and August 7, 2018) registered in connection with the Kotkapura firing incidents.
