The International Day of Peace was celebrated at Mayfair Nagar basti of Salia Sahi slum here on Tuesday being organised by the Society for Nature Education and Health (SNEH). SNEH chairperson Subarna Ghosh said peace is the primary pillar of development. Chief Speaker Menonite Central Committee representative Mnajula Patnaik urged slum dwellers to discard violence both in home and community and build social order through mutual understanding. Organisation advisor Subas Panda said SNEHA has been working in eight habitations of the slum for last five years. It is implementing a unique project on restorative justice in the slum community and has formed eight peace committees working towards empowering community-based peace builders by enhancing their capacities in conflict resolution.
A Padma Library, meant exclusively for children and set up in the Peace Park in Mayfair Nagar Basti, was inaugurated on occasion. The children staged a skit and performed two tribal dances and then settled down to a storytelling session in new library.
