SP walkout over cane price

Thursday, 04 March 2021 | PNS | Lucknow

Samajwadi Party members, on Wednesday, walked out of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly during the Question Hour over the issue of cane price, accusing the government of being anti-farmer.

The opposition party was not satisfied with the reply by the government.

During the Question Hour, SP member Narendra Verma wanted to know from the government whether the cane production cost had increased due to rise in prices of diesel, fertiliser, pesticides and agricultural equipment, and if the government was considering an increase in cane price.

In his reply, Sugarcane Minister Suresh Kumar Rana said the state advisory price (SAP) of cane was declared after taking into note cane production and sugar production cost and other factors, and the state had already done so for 2020-2021. He said while the price for early variety was fixed at Rs 325 per quintal, for unapproved varieties it was Rs 310 per quintal and for common variety the price was Rs 315 per quintal. On increasing the SAP, the minister said, the "question does not arise" as for 2021 it had been already fixed.

The minister also cited some data of payments made to cane farmers by the previous Samajwadi Party regime and said the present government was committed to the welfare of farmers.

Leader of opposition Ram Govind Chaudhary (SP) said the minister did not answer the important question.

"When you are not raising the SAP, how can you double the income of farmers? He asked, adding that the present government was anti-farmer.

He then walked out of the House along with other SP members.
