A two-day technical meet on 'Utilization of Steel Plant Wastes and Value Addition' titled ‘UTSAVA 2021’ concluded today at Ispat Bhawan, RDCIS, SAIL, Ranchi. The event was inaugurated by N. Banerjee, ED (RDCIS); keynote speaker was Dr. Harish Hirani, Director (CSIR-CMERI, Durgapur). Several eminent scientists namely Dr. Supriya Sarkar & Dr. Santanu Sarkar of Tata Steel, SMR Prasad, HB Dutta, Dr. Rakesh Benadict, Scientist from IMMT, Bhubaneswar were the key speakers. Several participants from different Steel Plants attended the meet physically as well as on virtual mode.
In his Keynote address Dr. Hirani emphasized the need of knowledge sharing amongst national experts and stakeholders as he opined that various technologies in channelizing steel wastes into wealth were already available. The need was to drive synergy among them through knowledge sharing. Huge volumes of Slag at steel plants were an opportunity to leverage commercial gains. There was also a requirement of customization of technologies as plant to plant there were waste variations. N. Banerjee in his inaugural address stressed on compliance of Environmental Social Governance (ESG) and the need to adopt circular economy in steel plants.
