TV journalist joins probe for rape charges against him

A 28-year-old Mumbai-based television journalist, Varun Hiremath, joined the investigation in connection with an alleged rape case after over a month.

According to a senior police official, Hiremath joined the investigation on Sunday following the High Court orders. "He was questioned for seven hours.

He was questioned about his whereabouts, police said.

Earlier, a 22-year-old woman lodged a complaint where she alleged that she was raped by Hiremath at a five-star hotel in Chanakyapuri on February 20.

On the basis of her complaint, an FIR under IPC sections 376 (punishment of offence of rape), 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) was registered at Chanakyapuri police station here.

On Friday, the Delhi High Court granted interim protection from arrest to Hiremath in the case provided he joins the police investigation.

“Petitioner be not arrested till the next date of hearing subject to him joining the investigation as and when directed,” the high court had said.
