The UP government is said to have made all arrangements to meet the demand of vaccines in the state. On Saturday, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday announced the expansion of the vaccination drive in the state. From Monday, vaccine jabs will be administered to people in the 18+ category in five more districts, including Mirzapur, Banda, Gonda, Azamgarh and Basti.
“The vaccination drive for the 18+ category has been suspended in Delhi, Mumbai, Rajasthan and Karnataka due to the shortage of vaccines. On the contrary, Uttar Pradesh, despite being the most populous state, is conducting aggressive vaccination to counter the pandemic surge under the supervision of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath,” according to an official communique released on Saturday.
The districts where the vaccination drive is underway include Aligarh, Agra, Prayagraj, Kanpur, Ghaziabad, Gorakhpur, Jhansi, Bareilly, Meerut, Moradabad, Lucknow, Varanasi, Saharanpur, Firozabad, Mathura- Vrindavan, Ayodhya, Shahjahanpur, Gautam Budh Nagar, Mirzapur, Banda, Gonda, Azamgarh and Basti.
Experts said quickly vaccinating all adults is crucial to fighting the devastating second wave. The state has so far administered as many as 1,47,94,597 doses of vaccine. As many as 1,16,12,525 people have received their first dose while 31,82,072 have been fully vaccinated. Till now, a total of 3,65,835 doses have been administered to people in 18-44 years category.
“While choosing a vaccine centre, make sure that there is an open space for the waiting area to maintain social distancing,” the CM told officials concerned. He added that online registration was mandatory for taking the shot.
The state government has already made an advance payment to the vaccine manufacturers. The government has already placed orders for the supply of one crore Covid vaccine doses — 50 lakh doses from Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech International Limited that manufactures Covaxin and 50 lakh doses from the Pune-based Serum Institute of India that makes Covishield. The state has received 3.50 lakh Covishield doses and 1.50 lakh Covaxin doses.
The state government had floated a global tender for 40 million vaccine doses earlier this month to fulfil the huge requirement. The government has also opened communication channels with prospective suppliers to ensure quick delivery of vaccines to boost the inoculation
Uttar Pradesh is estimated to spend up to Rs 100 billion to buy the vaccines. The state government held early talks this week with companies such as Pfizer and the local partner of the maker of Russia’s Sputnik V.
