Woman, her son held for enticing women to steal their jewellery

The Delhi Police has arrested a 45-year-old woman and her son for allegedly cheating women by enticing them into conversation and later taking away their jewellery.

Police said that the accused, identified as Shanti Devi and her son Praveen, aged 20, were arrested following raids at their house in west Delhi's Raghu birnagar. The mother-son duo along with their associate, who are absconding used to steal jewellery from women after enticing them into talks.

According to Atul Kumar Thakur, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), South district, the matter came to notice after a woman who was targeted by the mother-son duo in south Delhi's Malviya Nagar area approached police with her complaint on April 9.

“In her complaint, the woman alleged she had gone to hospital with her sister-in -law for some check-ups, when the accused woman who was with her son and an associate enticed her into their talks and later took away her ear rings, pendant set and a finger ring,” said the DCP.

“Based on the complaint, police registered a case under section 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of Indian Penal Code and initiated an investigation,” said the DCP.

“During probe, CCTV footages of nearby areas were also checked. After the identity of the suspects were known, raids were conducted at Raghu birnagar from where they were nabbed. The accused woman told police that she committed the offence with her son and one of her associates.

They sold out victim's jewellery to some unknown persons, the DCP said.

“The accused woman and her son were arrested and produced before the court wherein the lady was remanded to  judicial custody and her son has been taken to one day police custody remand to recover the cheated jewellery and to arrest the co-accused persons,” said the DCP.

“The accused have also disclosed about their involvement in another case of cheating registered at Ambedkar Nagar police station,” said the DCP, adding further investigation is underway..
