A woman was killed in Borai village under the Mangalpur police station in Jajpur district on Monday night for opposing illegal liquor trade. The deceased was identified as Laxmi Jena (36). Reports said Jena, who was in the forefront of a movement against illegal liquor sale, was stoned to death by unidentified miscreants.
A few days ago, a meeting had been held under her leadership to stop selling of illegal liquor in the area. On April 21, a group of villagers had also filed a written complaint with the Mangalapur police in this connection.
However, police did not take any action. Instead, cops called the two parties to make a compromise, alleged some villagers. The concerned liquor seller proposed that he would stop selling liquor once the stock he has in his house got exhausted.
But the villagers did not agree to his proposal. Later, the liquor seller and some of his aides hit Laxmi’s head with a stone killing her on the spot.
Meanwhile, the main accused Bijay Jena (38) and his four family members have been detained in this connection by police.
