Woman takes poison in police station

Monday, 01 March 2021 | PNS | BHUBANESWAR

A young woman allegedly consumed poison in the premises of the Balipatna police station on outskirts of Bhubaneswar on Sunday for being betrayed by her lover.

The victim Rita Behera (24), daughter of Bichitrananda Behera of Somana Sasan village, was rescued by police and admitted to the Balipatna Community Health Centre. Later, she was shifted to the Capital Hospital here as her condition worsened.

Reports said Rita and Gopal Behera of Somana Sasan had been in love with each other since a long time. However, their love life was not that smooth. Even, the 40-year-old Gopal was booked in a criminal case following a police complaint by Rita.

Rita had reportedly attacked Gopal with an iron rod to foil an alleged rape bid on her at her house in September 2020.

In a counter case, the family of Gopal alleged that their son was attacked by Rita’s family and was found abandoned with fractured legs and hands near an electrical transformer of the village.

Rita and Gopal were in love; and over the years, they had developed physical intimacy, Rita’s mother Sushma Behera reportedly said.
