With Makar Sankranti being celebrated with fervour across the state, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath followed the tradition by offering the first khichdi at Gorakhnath temple in Gorakhpur on Thursday. Later, the khichdi sent by the King of Nepal is offered at Gorakhshnath.

Makar Sankranti is a major festival of Gorakhnath temple and lakhs of devotees from across UP, Bihar, Nepal and the country throng this place to offer khichdi to Baba Gorakshnath.

This tradition of offering khichdi to Baba Gorakshnath is centuries old and is celebrated with great joy and fervour. The temple also holds a month-long khichdi Mela from Makar Sankranti in the temple premises. Makar Sankranti is considered the best period of the year in Hindu tradition for starting any auspicious event. It is also said that even Bhishma Pitamah waited for this time to breathe his last.
