Work attire depends on the kind of place one works at. A management professional will almost always be found wearing suits however people working in creative industries can wear smart casuals.
Even when you can wear casuals in your workplace, you will need to make sure they are smart casuals. Then there are certain standard rules for both men and women that are universal. For men big checks on shirts are a no-no. You can not wear white socks with black shoes. Your tie should always be darker than your shirt. Sleeve cuffs of your dress shirt should be exposed about half an inch under the suit jacket. Your belt should be fairly thin and the same colour as your shoes. Women can start with keeping colour, cut and shape to subtle. Peep toe shoes are not considered office wear. Sleeveless tops should be kept in the casual wear domain.
