Think out of the box

Considering a full-time career in visual blogging? Here are some insights

Lately, there has been a wide range of emerging careers that are unconventional as more and more youth deviate from conventional career options such as medicine, law and engineering. Careers such as photography, design, event management are growing rapidly as people break free from rigid mindsets regarding new-age career options. Visual blogging or vlogging, as it’s now commonly known, is also one such choice that has gained immense traction in recent years, especially with the advent of social media and high-quality smartphone cameras. Social media has become vlogger-centric because more and more people seek engaging, bite-sised content in regional languages.

However, despite increasingly easy access, making a full-time career out of it requires strategy, skill, and above all, perseverance as it has several aspects tied to it such as choosing a specific line of interest, working with the correct partners, monetisation with brands and more.

Having said that, Pulkit Agrawal, co-founder of Trell (lifestyle social commerce platform), shares how one can build a full-time career in vlogging and sustain it in the long.

The skills needed

One of the most important things a full-time vlogging career demands is inherent motivation. Vloggers must be open to iterating and trying various forms of content, especially if they wish to establish and sustain themselves in the segment. It is a continuous exercise where content creators may often start with a certain topic but end up with something entirely different. They, especially at the start of their career, need to tap into their creative spirits and ideologies and constantly refine their skills as well as content as per the feedback/response received from the viewers.

Moreover, to dedicatedly pursue vlogging, one must be willing to experiment, move out of their comfort zone, and shift their mindset. Once vloggers have established themselves at least to an extent, they get to work with brands or celebrities, and can further build their careers based on these collaborations. Today’s tech-driven world offers state-of-the-art infrastructure for aspiring vloggers to kickstart their careers and make a name for themselves.

The growth prospects

It is a field that offers a myriad of opportunities as there are no limits or restrictions to what a person can vlog about. It all depends on the vlogger’s passion and their subject of interest. As they begin to gather a substantial follower count with good audience engagement and establishes themself, the growth prospects are boundless since brands and the audience begin to recognise and trust their work. More opportunities come their way, thereby paving the way for earning more from their vlogging career.

Recently a report published by a business online stated that today, Category-A social media influencers or the biggest names online, earn around `2L-15L. Category-B influencers earn between `15,000-2L, while category-C earns around `5,000-20,000 monthly, and these numbers are only expected to increase.

 Sustaining as a full-time vlogger

Digitisation, increased internet proliferation and rising smartphone usage has resulted in a significant number of people turning to vlogging, especially amid the pandemic, where people are looking to keep themselves and others engaged while staying indoors. However, a considerable percentage of them might merely be exploring vlogging as an amateur or simply pursuing it as a hobby. To sustain yourself as a full-time vlogger, there are certain things that you need to follow.

For instance, formulating a new concept and coming up with fresh content that is engaging to your audience is a must. Otherwise, your career may become redundant. Regular innovation, thinking out-of-the-box and coming up with new concepts are some of the key things that you need to do to sustain yourself as a full-time vlogger.

Vloggers: The new essential part of the content landscape

Vloggers, in today’s world, are content creators that bridge the gap in engaging people with a wide range of content as every individual’s preferences differ. Furthermore, in today’s day and age where social media content is the king, vlogging is receiving its due credit as a full-time career. Content creation has become an integral aspect for several businesses as they turn to new-age marketing strategies. Vlogging platforms are also facilitating it as a full-time career and setting up robust infrastructure to enable them to monetise their content.

 Futurescape

According to Statista, 46.44 per cent of our population was accessing social networks in 2019. In 2020, the number increased to over 50 per cent with the pandemic putting restrictions on entertainment avenues available in India. It is further estimated that by 2025, this penetration would be a whopping 67 per cent. Vlogging has been a niche activity as a majority of people, up until recently, have not been well equipped to pursue it as a full-time career.

Today, however, it is no longer a cumbersome task as more and more people begin to express themselves through visual content. The future looks promising, and the vlogging ecosystem is only set to thrive in the forthcoming years.
