Writing on the walls

Here are a few ideas you must explore to add a spark to your room

Whenever we think of decorating our homes, walls fall last into the list or might not even get a chance. They often remain neglected as we focus on furnishings, furniture and accessories to add a spark.

Sushhmita Siingh, the Principle designer at Sushmita Singh Design shares a few ideas that one can explore to make your walls speak. Let these ideas be an inspiration in making your walls your canvas of self-expression.

Hang pictures and photos

The paint colour of your wall is relevant when you make a collage of memories on your wall. The images you choose to display should have a contrast or light and dark monochrome ones.  The frame that you choose need to balance the size of the wall and the room. We often see a huge painting with really broad frames when the room size id 12ft x12ft, which is totally out of context. A sense of balance is extremely important. Often people tend to overlook such minor but very important details, which can add or destroy the look. Family portraits, paintings, posters (digitally printed, hand painted ones) add emotions to the wall. It becomes a great conversation starter and lends your walls a novel persona.

Greenery indoors

Instead of having plants that sit comfortably on your floor, hang them on the wall if space and cleaning is a constraint. Fix wall hanging pots and fancy holders that make your greens look attractive. Greenery can be seasonal colourful flowers and coloured leaf plants that add colour to an otherwise plain wall. You can also decorate an entire wall full of crawlers covering the wall in beautiful patterns, formed naturally. Nowadays availability of good quality artificial plants come in handy when maintaining real plants is an issue. They have size variants, which is helpful. Digital wallpapers, block printed fabric wall papers also are a great add-ons to your walls, which can be both formal and informal.

DIY ideas

If you are a creative person or like to use your free time in creating things, you can dedicate a wall for your creative space. Hang your paintings, your origami objects and crafts on the wall. Use the walls to support your creations. If you sculpt then use it to keep it against a wall, it has a dedicate space. Make selves on the wall to display your DIY projects and stay motivated on your creative journey.

Bookshelves

Dedicate a wall to your books. Books lend character to any room. If you don’t own too many, you may fill the space with memoires and display articles from your latest collection. Pillows and decorative ceramics make for great space filler on a shelf as well. You may also use bookshelves as storage spaces. Also photo frames and small lamps to highlight the accessories can be displayed.

Wanderlust

Decorate your wall with a large size map of the world. Scratch out maps is also in trend. You can also display your purchases on your journey across the globe. If you have not travelled much you can always use this space to make a mood board and manifest your travel dreams.

Lights

Fancy LED lights on walls create a pattern which adds to the ambience as well as contributes to the illumination of the room, thus a multifunctional element and also value for money.

When you style a wall, you must know that it is a place you will be looking at often. So have something that will inspire you.
