People who were till recently loudly promoting Kashmir Files are mum despite targeted killings

The Kashmir of the 1990s is back. The targeted killings in the Valley have once again put a serious question mark on the tall claims of normalcy there. To intimidate daily wagers and Government employees, terrorists are gunning for Kashmiri Pandits and migrant labourers. In the past few weeks, several people including school teacher Rajni Bala, bank manager Vijay Kumar, Rahul Bhatt, labourer Dilkhush and a TV actor have been shot dead by terrorists. They want to send the message that they are still in control and they decide who lives or dies in the Valley. This is a dangerous paradigm and the Government must act fast to restore people’s confidence. The Government teachers are already protesting and want to leave at the earliest. A few weeks back, The Kashmir Files, a film on the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits, brought back the horror that they had to undergo which led to their flight from the Valley. The film was promoted by the BJP rank and file and heated TV debates reopened the wounds of Kashmiri Pandits. Many self-appointed ‘spokespersons’ of Kashmiri Pandits spoke at length about the latter’s plight and misery. They are now conspicuous by their absence.

Were they just promoting the film for ulterior motives or they can’t muster enough courage to ask the Government to take action now. Not a single one of them seems to have sympathised with the people recently killed in the Valley. Ironically, the people and parties that were trolled for not adoring The Kashmir Files (as if that were the ultimate test to show solidarity with Kashmiri Pandits) are now out and demanding tough action. Uddhav Thackeray and his party are quite vocal about it, and so is Arvind Kejriwal who was trolled for not making the film tax-free in Delhi. It is high time we understood as a nation that whatever we do or say has consequences. Not saying that The Kashmir Files is responsible for the recent spate of killings in the Valley but aggression in the public domain can have repercussions and put people’s lives in danger, be it the Government servants in the Valley or Kashmiri students studying in Mumbai. Law and order is a serious matter better left to the Government to deal with, not a subject of meaningless TV debates or propaganda fiction.
